Our Story
From one man in his garage fixing bicycles for friends to a community working together to help people in need.
A passion for recycling and education
In 2005, WE-CYCLE-USA started in the garage of our founder Robert Chacon. It began as a therapeutic hobby rebuilding bicycles and a way to give back to the community. Initially bikes were gathered from back yards of friends and family. Through word of mouth and work related contacts in the vocational rehabilitation community, more bikes were gathered and more people were helped. It wasn’t long before we came to a realization that recycling bicycles and giving them to people in need was not enough. We also needed to educate and train people to maintain and fix their bicycles so they could keep them on the road.
A call for advocacy
Then, as the economy took a turn for the worse and gas prices soared to record levels, our mission grew to include advocacy for bicycles as an alternative form of transportation. While obviously good for the environment, bicycle use also encourages a healthy lifestyle. Which is why we believe that by promoting bicycle use, we help raise awareness for our environment and the well-being of our community.
A place to call home
As demand grew and bicycles piled up, it became apparent that we needed a place where bike parts and tools could be stored, bikes recycled and people trained. On February 1, 2010, we secured a place and began making plans for the formalization of WE-CYCLE-USA INC, a charitable, educational and ecological 501 (C)(3) organization.
On May 1, 2010, WE-CYCLE-USA celebrated our Grand Opening with the help of our supporters and friends. Today, we continue to plan and to implement our mission by working with our volunteers and joining our community in furthering our cause.
